Chapter 16

Feather

I was more than a little scared as I stepped into the swirling gray wall and the Mists enveloped me.

Fear is not a bad thing, Feather, Leoa said softly. Her small rodent form had lifted off from my shoulder once we were in the Mists and floated around me like she had when she was a ball of energy. It was strange to watch the small, mousy form ‘swimming’ through the Mists. Fear protects us from danger, and there are dangers in the Mists.

But…? I asked, hoping there was a ‘but.’

Leoa gave a soft chuckle. Yes, as you suspect, there is a ‘but.’ I felt her drawing a heavy breath. But fear limits us. It reduces you to a baser being, an animal, where your options are only to fight or flee or freeze. You must learn to tame your fear. To feel it, but not to let it control you.

How do I do that?

By knowing you’re more powerful than any foe you might face.

I am?

Here in the Mists you are, yes. There are beings that might drain you of energy completely by accident, but I’ll keep them away from you. They don’t even see you as you. It’s like you’re a flower they might pick. And everything else here is of a different world so removed from yours that they wouldn’t even know how to harm you. In truth, the only thing here that can hurt you… is you.

Me?

Another soft laugh. Yes. In the Mists, things are as you make them. There is no ground beneath you unless you believe there to be. The trees you see are not there. You can walk right through them… Unless you wish them to be real and firm, then they are. I have heard of Chosen who trip over… nothing… in the Mists, then fall, expecting something hard or sharp to hit them… and so it does, and it wounds or kills them. But if you can control your fear here, then this is a world of wonders. You can fly, or fall for an eternity, you can imagine the kiss of a lover and feel it on your lips.

That last thought was intriguing. I did want to fly, but first perhaps I’d try something simpler. I closed my eyes and imagined Tail next to me. Suddenly I felt his warmth, his hard body close. I imagined him cupping my face and kissing me, and I felt his hands and the soft brush of his lips. I lost myself in that fantasy for a moment, feeling one of his hands smooth the dress down over my form, pressing to my every curve. Then he was pulling up my dress, warm hand on my thigh and caressing inward.

I shuddered at his ephemeral touch and blinked my eyes open to see… nothing but Mists. His touch vanished, leaving me just a little hot.

“Oh!” I breathed heavily.

Leoa Laughed. That’s a first. I don’t think I’ve known anyone who’s made out with the Mists quite that sensuously before.
